A visit to SPS Library M A Road Srinagar – A Report
Students along with four female faculty members from GDC Khansahib visited SPS Library on 23 November 2021 at 2.15 pm. All students were desperate to visit Public Library for the first time. One of the employee Mr. Gowher of the SPS library guided us about whereabouts of library.
He said that library is headed by Director Libraries and Research. The department is charged with responsibility of providing free access to library facilities. The department lends books and other reading materials to the public by means of membership for one financial year. After that membership is to be renewed.
The objective is achieved through chain of Public Libraries at different districts, tehsil and block levels across Jammu and Kashmir State. Reference books are provided to different age groups for reading purpose in the library. The department has collection of about 60 thousand books and about 40 thousand titles in different subject areas. The library has added different corners for competitive examinations like IAS and KAS. The department has collection of manuscripts in different languages like Arabic, Persian, Balti, Dogri, Hindi, Sanskrit etc. Same material is made available to general public for reference purposes only. A separate section has been established for senior citizens in the ground floor where they can spend their leisure hours. Also, a separate section has been designed for kids wherein they can enjoy by playing with different toys or even read books of their choice. It was also seen that public libraries in Jammu and Kashmir have switched from manual mode to automated mode and thus allowing online access to their information. Students along with faculty has learnt about usage of public library, how to become member of such Libraries and how to avail different information services.
At 3:30pm students along with faculty members left the place.
