The NSS unit & Eco-club of GDC Khansahib in collaboration with the Department of Social Forestry, Govt. of Jammu & Kashmir, organised a plantation drive at the campus on 24th March 2022. The drive was jointly inaugurated by Dr. Syed Tanvir Indrabi – Principal GDC Khansahib – and Regional Director Social Forestry (Kashmir) Mr. Mehraj ud Din Malik. Hundreds of plant samplings were planted by the officials of the Social Forestry Department, Faculty members of the college and NSS volunteers.
Thereafter, Mr. Mehraj ud Din Malik delivered a power point presentation in the conference hall of the college on “Social Forestry & Livelihood Opportunities”. He dwelt on the grassroots organisational set-up which engages in social forestry. Commenting on the livelihood generation he said: “An average 4ft girth popular yields 35 cfts of timber and fetches an amount of ₹8000. Wood based industries like saw mills, plywood, pencil, bat etc use timer based materials”. He also highlighted the role of social forestry department in promoting apiculture, creation of fodder banks, cultivation of medicinal plants and in promoting sericulture. Earlier, Dr. Indrabi welcomed the guests and laid emphasis on protection of forest cover and promotion of eco-sensitivity among the masses.
The programme was moderated by Prof. Zafar Shahdad Khan while Prof. Aashik Hussain presented the vote of thanks.
