International Women’s Day celebrated at Govt. Degree College Khansahib

 The International Women’s Day, organised by the college NSS unit, was celebrated at GDC Khansahib on 10^th March 2022. Prof. Aqeb Manzoor, Assistant Professor of Arabic, moderated the session. In his inaugural address Dr. Syed Tanvir Indrabi – Principal of the college – expressed his desire & determination in taking this institution towards achieving new heights of academic brilliance. He thanked the faculty for their sincerity & dedication shown in realising the aims and objectives set-forth in this regard. He laid emphasis on equality between men & women & the need to facilitate the empowerment of women. Punctuality, discipline & morality should be the hallmark of a person’s character, he said.

Thereafter, Dr. Sajad Ahmad Padder, Assistant Professor of Political Science at the institution, gave a speech of the theme “Political Participation & Representation of Women: An Overview”. In his speech, Dr. Sajad highlighted the under-representation of women at all levels of political decision making – national, state/provincial & local. This is reflected by the data which shows that there’re only 25 per-cent women parliamentarians in the world. By the mid 2021, only 26 women were serving at the executive government positions. The scenario is slightly better at the local government level where-in women’s representation stands at 36 per cent. The speaker highlighted the imperatives of upliftment & empowerment of women by way of affirmative action/reservation at all levels of government. Political parties should play a pro-active role in enabling women’s adequate representation in the party structure as well. “While India took a great leap-forward by way of universal adult suffrage after independence in 1947 & by proving a minimum of 33 per cent reservation for women in local self-government, but much more needs to be done in the domain of participation & representation of women at all levels of decision-making process” he further said.

Three students from the institution, Ms Tabiyan Gul, Ms Insha Hamid & Mr. Younis Majeed spoke on different aspects of women empowerment. They laid emphasis on bridging the gap between legal entitlements of women & social structures/attitudes which negatively affect their upward mobility.

The programme ended with the vote of thanks presented by Ms Sumaya Sadiq.
